WebSiteRobot - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I have a Router or LAN, and if yes what shall I do?
  2. Do I have a Firewall, and if yes what shall I do?
  3. I have registered, where is my Web Page?
Your Web Page is at www.netforall.com/your_name/ where your_name is the username you chose at the registration.
  4. Do I need to know html
No. All you need is to be able to copy some files into the MyWebSite folder of your computer.
  5. My Web Page is empty, what do I do?
Locate the folder MyWebSite in your computer. It should be in the C Drive. Copy any file or folder into MyWebSite, then on the Control Center of the Robot, click on Synchronize. Now your Web Site is built. To update your web site, copy more files into your MyWebSite, then click on Synchronize. That's all!
  6. Why did you build the Robot?
Everyone who owns a computer has things to show like vacation pictures, homemade videos, musical recordings, homeworks, resume, recipes, poetry, thoughts, or something to sell like a house, a used car who knows. Our computers are all sitting right there on the Internet, but most of us have little time, skills, or resources. The Robot changes all that. Now it's like the Internet is there for you... Show what you've got!
  7. What do I need for the robot to work on my machine?
Nothing new besides what you already have: a computer and a connection to the Net via a modem, DSL, T1, whatever you have. The faster, the better.
  8. What kind of machine do I need?
Whatever you already have or whatever you are planning to buy. The Robot works Desktop, Laptop, with Windows95/98/2000/NT/XP, Linux, Unix...
  9. How long does it take to set up the robot?
5-10 minutes to create a brand new web site. Once you install and register, all you do is copy files or folders into the MyWebSite directory, and click to synchronize. Later on, you start having fun updating notes, adding files, encoding sound...
  10. Does the robot works behind firewalls?
Yes, as long as your System Administrator (SA) allows it. In that case, the SA will open a port on the firewall, forwards the request on that port to your machine, and modify the configuration of your robot. In normal cases where you have a direct connection to Net, no configuartion change is necessary.
  11. How secure is the Robot?
Indeed, security is a concern. The Web Server is configured to only show static files from the directory tree under MyWebSite. It does not know other directories, and it does not run servlet, cgi or other executables. It also show you who is accessing it and what file is requested. The system is meant to turn your computer into a web server with a webmaster to enable easy web publishing. You may read more about the Jetty Web Server here.
Linux/Unix users may configure the Robot to work with Apache or any other Web Server.
  12. I cannot see the MyWebSite Folder!
Notice that the very first time, right after registration, you need to go to the Control Center and click on Synchronize in order to create the MyWebSite directory. Whenever you add new files in the MyWebSite, you need to click on Synchronize (Control Center) or Refresh (Add Notes or Encode Panel). With the default configuration, the MyWebSite directory is found or created at C:\MyWebSite under Windows. One may also do a find under Windows or locate under Linux.
